Coronavirus causes some cancellations of high school games

Spring sports schedules are often shuffled because of poor weather. This season the teams are facing a more serious disruptive force — the coronavirus.

Four school districts in the Western Conference, Oak Harbor’s athletic league, have already cancelled some contests.

The Edmonds School District, which includes five schools, has cancelled all athletic competitions through April 12 because of the virus.

Stanwood (through March 16), Archbishop Murphy (March 22) and Marysville (March 23) have also halted competitions.

Oak Harbor Athletic Director Jerrod Fleury said Monday that the Wildcats do not plan to cancel any games.

That decision, however, is “day-to-day,” he added.

The league asked schools to make decisions as of Wednesday, March 11, about their plans for the next few weeks.

Wesco athletic directors will meet at the end of the month to discuss what to do about makeup games and tournament allocations, Fleury said.

The only school in the North Sound Conference, which includes Coupeville and South Whidbey, to cancel games is Sultan, which cancelled competitions through March 21.

“Schools are playing it on a week-to-week basis,” Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith said.

Other than Sultan, all other schools are planning on playing all games as scheduled, he added.
