Coach finds positives in loss | Softball

Oak Harbor High School softball coach Todd Showalter saw a bright side to the Wildcats' 18-0 five-inning loss at Snohomish Friday, March 21.

Oak Harbor High School softball coach Todd Showalter saw a bright side to the Wildcats’ 18-0 five-inning loss at Snohomish Friday, March 21.

He pointed out that the Panthers defeated Oak Harbor 21-0 on a no-hitter last spring. This time around, Alexa Findley picked up a base hit and Oak Harbor worked for three walks and two hit batters.

“We had people in new positions and some made good strides,” Showalter said. “We really practice well and we just haven’t transferred our practice ability to the games yet, but we are still young and getting there.”

The Wildcats were hurt by four errors and “five makable plays that we just didn’t make,” Showalter said.

Snohomish out-hit Oak Harbor 19-1, with the Panthers’ Trysten Melhart and Jennie Winston collecting three each.

Oak Harbor (0-2) goes to Ferndale (3-0) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, and then hosts Squalicum (0-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 27.
