The two games of the double header couldn’t have been more different, but the good news for the Coupeville High School baseball team one was a win over Cedarcrest, previously unbeaten in conference play, Monday, April 1, in Duvall.

The Wolves pulled out a 6-5 victory in the tense opener, then the Red Wolves rebounded by clubbing Coupeville 20-1 (yes, 20-1) in the second game.

Coach Willie Smith said, “It was interesting. We won the first game and played extremely well. Then in the second, as many good things that we did in game one, we did just the opposite.”

In game one, the Wolves mixed 10 hits with three Tiger errors to score one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to build a 6-2 lead.

Two-run singles by Morgan Payne in the second and Ben Etzell in the third highlighted the scoring. Drew Chan finished 2-for-3.

Smith said, “We had good production throughout the lineup and were able to execute in all phases of the game offensively.”

Pitcher Etzell was “in command the entire game and we played solid defense behind him stranding nine runners through the game,” Smith said.

He added, “Ben did a great job of keeping their top five hitters off the bases, holding them to just four singles. It was a huge key to keeping their offense in check.”

Coupeville actually took the lead in the five-inning second game with a run in the first thanks to a double by Payne.

Not much else went right. The Red Wolves blended a mountain hits with a handful of walks and errors to bury Coupeville. The Wolves committed five errors over an inning and a half (mid-second through third) and Cedarcrest (8-1, 8-2) scored 10 runs during the span.

Smith said the goal is to win the series, which concludes at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Coupeville.

“Our challenge is putting game two behind us and focusing on getting re-focused.”
