The Central Whidbey Major (10-12) Little League softball team scored in every inning on the way to a 15-11 win over South Skagit in the opening round of the three-team District 11 tournament Tuesday, June 12, in Sedro-Woolley.
Central Whidbey met Sedro-Woolley Wednesday; results of that game were not submitted at press time.
If Central Whidbey won the Sedro-Woolley game, it advanced to the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday to face the winner of South Skagit and Sedro-Woolley. The team coming through the losers’ bracket would have to defeat Central Whidbey twice to win the title.
If Central Whidbey lost to Sedro-Woolley, it would meet South Skagit again at 6 p.m. Thursday in a loser-out game.
Central Whidbey pounded out nine hits and received seven walks in the win over South Skagit.
An eight-run third inning helped CW take control.
Central Whidbey scored single runs in the top of the first and second innings.
Singles by Gwen Gustafson and Allie Lucero led to the initial run; then Cypress Socha led off the second inning with a base hit and eventually scored on a ground out to give Central Whidbey a 2-0 lead.
After South Skagit tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Central Whidbey exploded for eight runs in the third.
A double by Allie Lucero and singles by Gustafson and Maya Lucero helped fuel the big inning.
In the fourth, a single by Socha and three walks resulted in three more runs and 13-6 lead.
Allison Nastali walked and scored in the fifth, and Gustafson doubled and scored in the sixth to finish Central Whidbey’s scoring.
