The Coupeville High School soccer team played well the beginning of each half, but Cedarcrest flooded the net late in each session for a 6-0 win Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Duvall.

The Wolves and goalie McKayla Bailey shut down the Red Wolves for 24 minutes before Cedarcrest punched in a goal on a “great effort,” according to Coupeville coach Dan d’Almeida. Three more scores quickly followed and the Wolves lost any momentum they had, according to d’Almeida.

Joye Jackson took over in goal the second half and helped blank Cedarcrest (1-0, 1-1) for the first 20 minutes.

Bailey and Jackson combined for 11 saves.

Cedarcrest, a state finalist last year, is a good club, d’Almeida said, and the Wolves’ “defensive effort was good again; we were able to break up a lot of their plays.”

Having to drop deep to defend against the Red Wolves, Coupeville was unable to get its counter attack going.

“We couldn’t get behind their defense like we did against Oak Harbor,” d’Almeida said.

Though Coupeville failed to score, d’Almeida “definitely sees progress, we have more offensive options; however, we are still trying to find the right combination.”

He added, “It is a matter of getting in the right place on the field…We are strong up the middle, now we will work on the flanks.”

Coupeville (0-1, 0-2) plays at Lakewood (0-2-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.
