Cedcarcrest rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to slip by the host Coupeville High School softball team 4-3 Thursday, March 27.

Though the Wolves suffered through four rainouts and played only one other game this season, they were sharp until the seventh inning when two errors helped the Red Wolves rally.

Cedarcrest scored one in the top of the first, then Coupeville tied it in the bottom of the third. Madi Roberts led with a single and scored on Hailey Hammer’s two-out base hit.

In the fifth, Coupeville scored twice to take the lead. With one out, back-to-back infield singles by Roberts and Bree Messner got things started. After an out, Hammer came up with another clutch hit, this time driving in two.

Cedarcrest (1-1, 2-2) started the seventh with an out, then an error, single and error scored one run and put another on third. A single and double followed to score the tying and winning runs.

Coupeville’s McKayla Bailey “really pitched well,” according to co-coach David King. Bailey took a line drive off the knee in the second inning, but she toughed it out and played “a great defensive game up the middle,” King said. She finished with two putouts and six assists to go with four strikeouts.

The two seventh-inning errors hurt the Wolves, but Coupeville also produced several highlight plays. Tiffany Briscoe made two nice catches in right field, and Emily Coulter made a backhand stop up the middle then threw from her knees to get an out.

Hammer went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Roberts added two hits. Messner, Bailey and Haley Sherman also collected hits.

Coupeville (1-1, 1-1) plays Lakewood (1-1, 2-2) at home at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31.
