Thirty-four was an unlucky number for the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team in its 73-45 loss to Sedro-Woolley in the opening game of the Bulldog Holiday Classic in Mount Vernon Monday, Dec. 29.

The Cubs’ Jackson Price blistered the Wildcats for 34 points and Oak Harbor committed a whopping 34 turnovers in the lopsided loss.

Oak Harbor (1-7) will wrap up the tournament at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, by playing Mount Vernon (2-6), a 92-88 loser to Ferndale Monday.

Earlier this season, the Bulldogs defeated the Wildcats 43-41 in Oak Harbor.

Oak Harbor tried to slow Sedro-Woolley’s uptempo offense by running a zone, according to coach John Weston.

The strategy worked in the opening period when the Wildcats held the Cubs to 12 points while scoring six.

Then the turnovers started to take their toll, allowing Sedro-Woolley easy looks in transition.

The Cubs led 33-19 at halftime and 51-30 after three quarters.

Price led the second-quarter blitz with 14 points, 12 coming from four three-pointers. In all, the Cubs hit nine shots from beyond the arc, five from Price.

“He (Price) is one of the best players we have seen this season,” Weston said. “He is a complete player. Not only does he score, but he also defends well and gets his teammates involved.

“Sedro is an experienced, good team.”

Dyllan Harris topped Oak Harbor with 21 points, Zach Jones had nine, Josh Cote seven, Ben Fikse four and Sean Erskine four.

Not all was bad for the Wildcats.

“I was pleasantly surprised with Preston Rankin and Josh Cote coming up from the JV team and contributing,” Weston said. “Josh came in and was assertive, (and) Preston came in and made an impact with his defense and rebounding.

“Zach Jones really showed some great leadership and resilience tonight as well; I was really proud of him.”

Oak Harbor out-rebounded Sedro-Woolley 28-21, but the Cubs committed 22 fewer turnovers.
