There was no shortage of goals in the past three soccer matches for Oak Harbor High School; unfortunately for the Wildcats, in two of the contests it was their opponents doing most of the damage.

Oak Harbor lost two league road matches, 8-1 at Edmonds-Woodway Thursday, Sept. 25, and 7-2 at Arlington Monday, Sept. 29. The losses were sandwiched around a 6-1 home nonleague win over Anacortes Saturday, Sept. 27.

In the loss to E-W, the Warriors’ Madison Schultz scored five goals to sink the Wildcats.

“We played well defensively but let in two goals before half time,” coach Mike Lonborg said. “In the second half, we ran out of gas.”

“Their team had two strong strikers up front,” he added. “Edmonds has a ton of high-end talent this year. One of their players is part of the U.S. National U-17 team.”

Despite the score, Lonborg said, his team “played hard throughout the whole game.”

Oak Harbor’s Caylie Etherington scored with a volley off of a corner kick from Lydia Peplinski.

Edmonds-Woodway raised its record to 1-2, 4-3.

Three different Arlington (2-1, 6-1) players scored twice to counter Wildcat goals by Jen Turnek and Etherington.

In the Anacortes match, the Seahawks’ lone goal came off a penalty kick.

Mary Johnston scored three times for the Wildcats, with assists from Taylor Edwards, Lauryn Plush and Jacalyn Hefflefinger.

Turnek added two goals, both assisted by Johnston.

Etherington collected the other goal, assisted by Plush.

“In the second half the girls put together some good combinations to work their way into the box and get shots off,” Lonborg said.

The Anacortes match finished the nonleague portion of the Oak Harbor schedule; the Wildcats won all four of the contests.

They are, however, 0-3-1 in conference action.

Oak Harbor plays Marysville-Pilchuck (1-2, 1-5-1) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
