’Cats improve against Kamiak

The first home swim meet of the season for any team is always a bit disorganized, and Tuesday’s matchup between Oak Harbor and Kamiak at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool was no exception.

Swimmers forgot they were in a particular event and were late getting to the starting blocks, additional heats were plugged in at the last moment and new scorers were introduced to “on the job training.”

The positive aspect of the meet was the Wildcats had a good showing against the strong Knights’ team and despite losing 118-74, Oak Harbor coach Erika Miller said she was pleased with the way the team performed.

“Kamiak has a strong team, but we swam better against them than we did last year,” she said. “We’re getting there.”

Junior John Hu won two events, the 100-meter freestyle and the 100 backstroke, in times of 56.17 and 1:05.32, respectively for the Wildcats.

Freshman Tyler Schell had a pair of victories in the 200 and-400-meter freestyles with times of 2:10.90 and 4:33.17, and Price Hu, also a freshman, won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:05.03.

“I swam better than I thought I would in the 100 freestyle,” John Hu said. “Those guys have a really good team.”

Schell said it was good to win in the first home meet of the season.

“The 400 freestyle wasn’t my best race, but it was a good race,” he said. “My brother, Devin, finished in second place and that was good, too.”

Brandon Vagt, who finished third in the 100 butterfly said teammate Price Hu is “El Capitan” of the butterfly.

“The butterfly is my best event and I swam about as good as I thought I could today,” Hu said.

The Wildcats next home meet is at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, against Shorewood.
