Sometimes the early spring weather can be unpredictable on Whidbey Island, but Wednesday was a great day for a track meet and the Oak Harbor Wildcats took full advantage of sunny skies and almost balmy temperatures to host WesCo North rivals from Snohomish and Stanwood.
The boys scored 67.50 points to tie Stanwood for first place and the girls score of 59 points was good enough for a second-place finish.
Stanwood’s girls scored 83 points to win, with the Snohomish Panthers finishing third in both halves of the meet.
For the Oak Harbor boys, Stephen Lewis had a big day winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and claiming another first-place blue ribbon as a member of the 4×100 relay team.
“It’s definitely not the weather that it usually is this time of the year,” Lewis said. “It’s normally rainy and overcast. The warm today really helped me speed up.”
Donovan Hunt won the long jump, was a member of the winning relay team and finished second to Lewis in both dashes.
Josh Duhrkopf won the 1,600 and 800-meter races, with teammate Cody Klauer second in both events.
“I just kind of stayed back the first two laps and tried to go fast at the end,” Duhrkopf said after finishing the 1,600.
“Me, I just tried to stay behind him and not let him go away,” Klauer said with a smile as he pointed at his teammate.
For the girls, Shantae Young won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and added the long jump title to her tri-fecta day.
“I thought I was going to be really slow today and when I came out, I really surprised myself,” Young said. “The wind was at my back and that helped, too.”
Hannah Bressler placed second in the 100 hurdles for the Wildcats and Adrianna Royal was second in the 800. Also placing second were Maura McKole in the 200 and the high jump, Janelle Yoshimoto in the long jump and the javelin, and Hope Thompson in the triple jump.
On the boys side, second place finishes went to Matt Reith in the 3,200, Greg Goebel in the 400 and Rashaad Smith in the high jump.
