Shannon Buys, skippering Magic Juan, captured the highest finish by a local sailor by placing second in his division in the annual Whidbey Island Race Week event July 16 to 20.

In all, 114 boats divided into 11 sections took part in the series which featured up to 10 races in some divisions.

Buys, from Coupeville, overcame a ninth-place finish in the first of eight races to place second in the Pacific Handicap Racing Fleet 10th division. He finished second in the third and seventh races and third in two others.

Portland’s Karen Anderson in Dragonfly dominated the division, winning all but one race.

Three Oak Harbor skippers took part in Race Week, all competing in the same 10-boat division as Buys. Dave Steckman (Skamokawa) placed fourth, Chad Holcomb (yeah dog) eighth and Jim McAlpine (Lucky Jim) ninth.
