Breaks go against Oak Harbor

Oak Harbor soccer coach Steve Barker said all the Wildcats need is to have a few things start breaking their way.

Despite having just a 1-4 record in the WesCo North, Oak Harbor has been playing well and Friday night’s game against undefeated Lake Stevens was yet another example of the courageousness the Wildcats have shown on the field this season.

The final score was 3-0 in favor of the Vikings, but Barker said the Wildcats played a good game against a very good team.

“Lake Stevens has good players and they are well coached,” he said. “That team was supposed to have been able to destroy us, but we had them pretty well played for most of the game.”

The Vikings got their first goal nine minutes into the game when Tyler Jones scored on a crossing pass. But after that, Oak Harbor’s defense stepped up in a big way and held Lake Stevens scoreless for the remaining 31 minutes of the first half.

Backup goalkeeper Caleb Koorn took over in the net at the 22-minute mark of the first half after Zach Koeller went out of the game with a hip injury. Barker remarked that he thought this was the best game Koorn had played in the net in a long, long time.

Lake Stevens peppered the Oak Harbor goal with 16 shots in the first period, but the Wildcat keepers were up to the task and kept the score 1-0 at halftime.

At the 47-minute mark of the game, Ethan Stuart beat Koorn with a header. The final goal was scored off a penalty kick by Evan Steinruck with just over two minutes remaining.

“We’re making tremendous progress, even though it might not appear that way on the scoreboard,” Barker said. “Our speed was better tonight, our cohesiveness was better and at this point, all we need is to have a few things break our way. The boys are giving it everything they’ve got and they are a courageous bunch of people. I like coaching them.”

Oak Harbor’s next home game is tonight at 7 p.m. against Marysville-Pilchuck. Varsity kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
