Freshman Chris Wichers leads the ‘Cats one more time as he took 21st in
Thursday’s Championships. As with the past couple races, Richard Carter and Tim Riney were right on his heels as they also made the top 30 (28th and 29th).
“Mount Vernon and Cascade barely beat us for our 4th place goal but I don’t
think our guys could have run any faster on the day. They kept the same
interval between the top 5 as last week’s Invitational even though the race
was 6/10ths of a mile longer. I was very happy with their performance
but I think the guys still aren’t satisfied with the results.”
Junior Brianne King takes top spot for Wildcats as she finishes 32nd. This
is the third girl to run No. 1 for Oak Harbor in the last three meets. Freshman Leonila Celestino and Junior Kellie Gamble were also right behind as they took 33rd and 35th. “The top 5 girls had the best race of the season as they even topped the boys with 49 seconds between the top 5. The sixth
place finish is a big step up as the girls were a distant 9th place (of 11
teams) in last year’s Wesco Meet.”
Both teams will compete next Friday, Oct. 26, at the District 1 4A
Championships at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. The girls run at
2:30 and boys at 4:30.
