Breaking out of an offensive slump, the Oak Harbor High School baseball team pounded visiting Stanwood 10-0 in five innings Thursday, April 17.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday in Stanwood but was rained out. When rain washed out the Spartans’ field again Thursday, the game was moved to Oak Harbor.

Now Friday’s game (4 p.m. April 18) between the two teams will be moved from Oak Harbor to Stanwood because the Spartans have yet to host a game in the three-game series.

Oak Harbor averaged about four hits a game over the past few weeks but thumped two Stanwood pitchers for 13 in the lopsided win. All came in only four-plus innings as the game was called in the bottom of the fifth win no outs because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Brent Mertins led the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs.

Danny Wolfe was 2-for-2 with three RBI; Tyler Snavely was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI; and Clay Doughty went 2-3 with a run and RBI.

Nate Stanford, Kevin Johnson, Brandon Bailey and Teddy Peterschmidt also had hits.

Starting pitcher Peterschmidt only needed on one run for the win, shutting out the Spartans with a three-hitter.

Oak Harbor scored two runs in the first on a walk to Stanford, a single by Johnson, a sacrifice fly by Wolfe and a base hit by Bailey.

In the third, Mertins doubled and scored on Wolfe’s single.

Oak Harbor broke open the game with five runs in the fourth. The Wildcats bunched together seven hits, all line drives, to upset the second-place Spartans (7-3, 9-4).

Only once before this season have the Wildcats (2-8, 2-11) scored more than three runs in a game; that came in their only other win, 11-1 over Shorecrest March 26.
