The Wildcat baseball team made it three wins in a row by outslugging Everett 13-11 on the Oak Harbor High School field Thursday, April 8.

After a dismal 0-4 Western Conference start, Oak Harbor has rebounded nicely with its trio of wins and is now 3-4 in league play and 6-5 overall. The Wildcats finish their two-game series with Stanwood (2-3, 3-3) at home today, April 9, at 4 p.m. Oak Harbor defeated the Spartans 5-4 Wednesday.

The game with Everett, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Everett, was switched to Thursday because of rain, and then switched to Oak Harbor because the Seagulls’ diamond was still unplayable yesterday.

Both teams muscled up and combined for 10 extra-base hits even though a strong win was blowing in from center field.

Oak Harbor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added a fourth run in the second. The Seagulls, who were the “home” team even though the game was played in Oak Harbor, then claimed the lead with a five-run second when they strung together five singles and a triple.

The Wildcats regained the lead for good by erupting for six runs in the third. Yale Rosen’s RBI single and Kian Mebane’s run-producing double were the big hits in the inning.

Oak Harbor took a comfortable 13-7 lead into the seventh, but the Seagulls (0-5, 1-8) didn’t go quietly. They scored four runs and had the tying runs on base before Ryan Byrne came in to close the door for the ‘Cats and record his fourth save of the season.

Mebane slugged two doubles for Oak Harbor and scored a run. Wade Burns and Sam Wolfe added two hits apiece; while Gabe Clark, Pat Higbee and Nate Young each clubbed doubles.

Both teams combined timely hits with a handful of walks and errors to pile up the runs in the high-scoring contest.
