The youth and inexperience of the Coupeville High School baseball team was evident in the Wolves’ 10-0 season-opening loss to visiting Lynden Christian Thursday, March 17.
Coupeville pitches Ian Smith and Alex McClain limited the Lyncs to only five hits but were victimized by nine errors. Lynden Christian did not record an earned run until its 10th tally in the fifth inning.
The Lyncs (2-1) , on the other hand, did not commit an error.
The Coupeville offense produced just three hits; two were infield singles by Brandt Bodamer and Jake Tumblin. Morgan Payne lined a shot off the second baseman’s glove for the other safety. The Wolves also struck out 10 times in the five-inning game.
Coach Willie Smith, who started six first-year players, was pleased with his pitching and said, in referenced to his defense, “We will get better.”
A walk and two errors gave Lynden Christian a run in the first. In the second, a walk, two errors and two hits tacked on four more runs.
The Lyncs, playing their third game of the season, put the game away in the fourth with four more runs, thanks, primarily, to four Coupeville errors.
The Wolves (0-1) host Nooksack Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m.
