A sloppy second quarter was the downfall for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in a 53-34 loss at Stanwood Thursday, Jan. 23.

The Spartans led by only two, 8-6, after the first quarter, then four Oak Harbor turnovers led to eight Stanwood points. The Spartans used that momentum to outscore Oak Harbor 17-4 in the quarter and lead at halftime 25-10.

The second half was much like the evenly-played first quarter as Stanwood only outscored the Wildcats 28-24.

Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said “we played really well” after the break.

Joanna Leete netted 17 points for the Wildcats, Jinai Guzman six, Natalie Fiallos five, Hayley Lundstrom two and AnnaBelle Whitefoot one.

Julie Heichel scored 23 for the Spartans and helped the Stanwood (5-4, 8-7) move into a tie with Everett (5-4, 9-7) at the top of the Wesco 3A North standings.

Oak Harbor (0-9, 0-15) hosts Everett at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29.
