Aparicio, Renninger to play for district title / Tennis

Coupeville seniors Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger will play for the District 3 doubles championship Thursday, May 17, at the Sprinker Tennis Center in Tacoma.

The Whidbey duo will challenge sisters Grace and Kate Jung from Cascade Christian for the title and a berth in the state tournament.

If Aparicio and Renninger lose the title match, they will take on the survivors of the consolation bracket for second place and the final state berth.

The Wolves beat two teams from Charles Wright Academy Wednesday to reach the finals.

They defeated Maria Gonzalez and Abby Kwon 7-5, 6-2 and Mei Ge and Casey Kim 6-4, 7-5.

Coupeville sophomores Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger, Sage’s sister, split their doubles matches and remain alive for a state berth.

They defeated Tobin Vaughn and Lizzy Sutherland of Vashon Island 7-5, 6-3 before falling to the Jungs in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-0.

Coupeville senior Claire Mietus lost both her matches and was eliminated. She fell to Zoe Rose of CWA 6-0, 6-0 and to Vilma Jurma of Port Townsend 6-0, 6-0.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26, at the Yakima Tennis Club.
