An auto accident May 16 prevented two girl golfers from southwestern Washington from competing in the district tournament at Oak Harbor’s Gallery Golf Course.

At approximately 3:13 p.m., the van carrying a coach, two golfers and a student manager was traveling east on Ault Field Road. When it approached the intersection with Goldie Road, it was struck by a pickup truck turning left from Ault Field Road onto Goldie Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The three girls and the coach were transported to Whidbey General Hospital as a precautionary measure. They were released later in the evening.

Unfortunately, the girls weren’t able to participate in the tournament. They were too sore to tee up, said David Wayman, assistant superintendent for the North Beach School District in Ocean City.

While the girls weren’t able to compete in the district, they will accompany the school’s male golfers to their state meet, scheduled this weekend in Bellingham. That way the girls would get exposure to a state competition even though they won’t be able to compete, Wayman said.

The Oak Harbor School District officials photographed the accident site for the North Beach School District. The district also provided a van to transport them from the hospital in Coupeville to a motel in Oak Harbor.

Wayman appreciated the help. “They were there helping us all the way,” he said.
