4th-quarter rally runs out of time, Wolves fall / Boys basketball

An avalanche of three-pointers in the fourth quarter wasn’t enough for the Coupeville High School boys basketball team as the Wolves lost 48-40 at Orcas Island Saturday, Dec. 8.

Coupeville entered the fourth quarter with only 18 points and trailed by 26, but the Wolves exploded for 22 points — 12 from freshman Hawthorne Wolfe — in final eight minutes to put a scare in the Vikings. Wolfe drilled a trio of three-pointers and Mason Grove added a pair as Coupeville tried to get back into the game.

Wolfe finished the contest with 18 points and five three-pointers. Grove and Gavin Knoblich scored 6 each, Jered Brown 5, Ulrik Wells 3 and Sean Toomey-Stout 2.

Orcas Island (1-2) led 10-4 after one quarter and then upped the lead to 26-8 at the break as Max Clark-Mattila scored 8 points in the second period. Tomas Holmes sank three from long distance as the Vikings outscored the Wolves 18-10 in the third quarter.
