Glacier Peak backed Callie Bircher’s two hitter with four first-inning runs to top the Oak Harbor High School softball team 5-1 in Snohomish Thursday, April 18.

Bircher, who was coming off a perfect game, struck out 12, her third consecutive 10-strikeout performance.

Most of the game’s action happened in the first inning.

The Wildcats scored their lone run and collected their only hits when Shawna Steele and Emily Saar hit back-to-back doubles in the first.

Glacier Peak (5-2, 9-5) took advantage of a rough outing for Oak Harbor freshman pitcher Tricia Sarns. Sarns walked four, gave up one hit and was the victim of an error as the Grizzlies scored four in the first.

Saar took over after seven batters in the opening inning and struck out the side. She finished with six strikeouts, two walks and one unearned run.

Coach Jess Boswell said, “Emily pitched one of her best games today. She gave the infield and outfield easy ground balls and pop flies. Our girls did a good job holding glacier Peak after the second inning.”

Offensively, though, the Wildcats couldn’t get anything going against Bircher.

“Bircher did have great control of her off-speed and change up pitches, which caused problems for our batters, but our girls didn’t take advantage of the other pitches in their at bat,” Boswell said.

Oak Harbor (2-4, 3-9) travels to Mountlake Terrace (3-3, 7-6) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 19.
