2nd-quarter woes cut down Wildcats / Boys basketball

A sloppy second quarter tripped up the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team in a 65-52 loss at South Whidbey Friday, Dec. 7.

The Wildcats trailed by only 1, 15-14, after the first period but were outscored 19-4 in the second.

Oak Harbor, losers of three straight after a season-opening win, goes to Everett to play Archbishop Murphy (3-0) in the Wesco opener at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12.

In the loss to South Whidbey, Dorian Hardin hit two three-pointers and Terrell Crumpton one in the first quarter to help Oak Harbor keep pace.

The Falcons pulled away in the second period behind 9 points from Kody Newman and 5 from Carson Wrightson.

Down 34-18 at halftime, Oak Harbor sliced 4 points off the disadvantage in the third period and went into the final frame down 41-29.

Hardin scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough and the 3A Wildcats fell to the 1A Falcons.

South Whidbey held off Oak Harbor by hitting 15 of 18 free throws in the fourth period and getting 16 points from Newman.

For the game, the Falcons made 28 of 33 foul shots. Oak Harbor was 11-for-18.

Newman finished with 30 points.

Hardin was the only Wildcat to get more than 6 points, tallying 22. Crumpton and Kevin Schuldt had 6 each; Andrew Baloy, Gavin Allen and Matt Kelley had 5; Ta’Shaun Howard 1 and Evan Nadeau 1.
