Public entities don’t have to obtain an appraisal before purchasing property.
That was news to a spokesman for the Washington State Auditor’s Office, a state lawmaker, and undoubtedly many local officials who have always operated under the assumption that appraisals are needed.
And it’s something that must change or the public will risk losing tax dollars on irresponsible land deals made in secret.
Coupeville School officials have publicly said they will start a Farm to School program this fall.
Let’s face it. We’re spoiled.
Even in our tough economy, most Americans enjoy a myriad of conveniences we take for granted. We awake to a warm house, turn night into day with the flip of a light switch, jump into a hot shower, get dressed and grab a cup of fresh brewed coffee before heading to work in our car or on the bus.
I am pleased to announce we just completed another successful “Drug Take Back Day” on Saturday, April 26.
My sincere thanks go to the City of Oak Harbor and Town of Coupeville in making this an island-wide event.
At the elementary school I attended in Anacortes, my classmates and I would line up in the halls for immunizations. There were the shots for measles/mumps/rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and sugar cubes for polio. We all held a copy of our vaccination records and, when our turn arrived, handed them to the school nurse for updating.
It was the culture … you got your shots and you didn’t argue about it.

This is an open letter to the Navy and its representatives, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.
I want to comment on the article “Navy looks to purchase 22 more Growlers from Boeing.”
It’s hard for me to know where to begin.
I was raised not to use the word “hate.” My mother used to say, you “dislike” something, don’t say “hate.”
Most of the time I’m conscientious of that little rule.
Most of the time.
But there are times when “hate” is the only word available to describe how intensely you feel about something.
I hate heroin.
Every spring, when I was a child, my parents would plant a vegetable garden.
We would plant tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots and my personal favorite — sugar snap peas.
While my dad turned the soil and did all the “heavy lifting,” my job was to plant the seeds in perfect rows.
There are few things sadder for a gardener than a plant that falls short of its potential. Sometimes it’s because it was put in the wrong spot. Other times, it’s because of neglect. And sometimes it’s a double whammy of poor placement and just letting it run wild.

What is it about life on the Rock that makes all of us so contented most of the time?
Can’t be the weather — too wet. Can’t be the booming economy — it isn’t. Can’t be the scintillating night life — um, let’s not go there.
A recent letter to the editor from Michael Monson, president of the anti-Navy group, stated people were crying “Chicken Little” because of the belief the base would close if the Coupeville group was successful in preventing the Growlers from flying out at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station’s OLF Coupeville.
