Willard Edwards

Willard Edwards, 96, died at Fairhaven May 19, 2003. He was born Feb. 10, 1907, to Harvey and Ella (Emmerson) Edwards in Forton, in the Darrington area. At an early age he moved to the Everson area where he lived until his retirement in 1974. During that period he was active as a businessman and volunteer worked serving as city clerk of Everson for 17 years. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce, a Cub Scout master, member of the Lions and Elks clubs, and devoted more than 35 years of service to the Everson Volunteer Fire Department.

In 1935 he married his first wife, Phillis Hill of Oak Harbor. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage and had one son, Ronald Edwards. Both preceded him in death as well as his two younger brothers, Bob Edwards and Harry Edwards of Whatcom County.

In 1988 Willard married Maudie Day of Coupeville and for 14 years, until Maudie’s passing in July 2002, they cruised the world and danced the night away.

Willard was a member of Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Oak Harbor Yacht Club, Oak Harbor Senior Center and most recently, a member of the PBY Memorial Association.

Sister-in-law, Beatrice Edwards of Lakewood, and nieces Joy McCaw of Lakewood, Judy Paulsen and husband Roger of Renton, and nephew, Buck Edwards of Bellingham survive Willard.

There will be a special remembrance for Willard Sunday, June 1 at United Methodist Church in Oak Harbor during the 10:30 a.m. service. Memorials in Willard’s name may be made to your favorite charity.

Private burial was held at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
