Wendy Campbell Strang DeWinter, 70, of Oak Harbor, Wash., died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at her home on North Whidbey Island. She was born June 29, 1944, in Seattle, the daughter of Max Campbell and Marie (Sis) Schmidt Campbell Strang.
Wendy grew up in Medina, Wash., and attended Greenbriar College for women, where she received a liberal arts degree. She also attended Arizona State University and received a BFA in English and photography. Wendy had a lifelong passion for journalism, healthy living and photography, being seldom seen without her camera.
She was very proud of her Washington family heritage as a descendant on her father’s side of the pioneer Campbell family who settled on Whidbey Island.
On her mother’s side, both great-grandparents emigrated from Germany and settled in Tumwater, where her great-grandfather, Leopold Schmidt, founded the Olympia Brewing Company. Wendy’s roots led to her enthusiastic, long-standing active commitment to support many community causes that benefited from her lively presence.
She is survived by her daughter, Claire Knutson, of Sedro Woolley; a granddaughter, Kaley Knutson (age 6) and a grandson, Colton Knutson (age 5), of Sedro Woolley; her sister, Candice (Candy) Campbell Schneider, of Fairfield, Iowa; her uncle, Peter G. Schmidt, of Seattle; and many loving cousins.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Wendy, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com
