Vollie Thoresen Beyer, 84, went home to be with her Lord on Jan. 28, 2007. She was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Mandan, N.D., the fifth of seven children of Inga Vigen and Thorstein H.H. Thoresen, a prominent state politician. She graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Community Nutrition on Jan. 23, 1944. She married the love of her life, Dick Beyer, on their graduation day. They had almost 60 years of married life together before Dick passed away in early 2004.
Vollie spent 30 years as an Army wife, making homes for the family in the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii and Europe. They raised three children. They retired in Pueblo, Colo., in 1974. In 1983 they moved to Oak Harbor where Vollie was an active member of the community, involved in her church, the Retired Officers Wives Association, the Yacht Club, and volunteer opportunities. She moved to Enumclaw in 2005 to be near her family.
One of Vollie’s greatest pleasures was spending time with children. She was Nana to many. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and was a gracious hostess who loved to entertain. She was a giving person and especially enjoyed being the wedding coordinator at her church for many years.
She is survived by her sister, Thordis Sollom of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughter Vicki (Rich) Whitbeck of Enumclaw; daughter Maren Sue (Tom) Harper of Plano, Texas; daughter-in-law Deborah (Gary) Light of Loveland, Colo.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Col. (ret.) Richard A. Beyer, her son Dr. Steven Beyer in 1977 and her grandson Ryan Whitbeck in 2005.
Private burial will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. Memorials may be sent to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Vollie’s name, 1253 NW Second Ave., Oak Harbor, Wash., 98277 or to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, WA-AK Chapter, 530 Dexter Ave. North, Ste. 300, Seattle, Wash., 98109.
