Vira Virginia Bohannan passed away Sept. 4, 2005 at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville at the age of 89. She was born Jan. 14, 1916 in Talpa, Texas to Scott and Pearl (Motley) Conner.
Vira was raised in Texas. She met William J. Bohannan at a dance and in January of 1936, they were married. Vira and her new husband, Bill loaded up the entire family, including William’s parents and sisters and moved to Wenatchee, where they worked in the apple orchards.
Vira and Bill moved to Burke, Idaho for a time, where Bill worked in the mines. They moved to Alaska until the war broke out in the Aleutian Islands and were evacuated to Seattle. They settled in the Northgate area where the Bohannan clan operated a chicken ranch.
Vira and Bill moved around the country for much of their lives. They were in Bremerton, Seattle, Montana, Michigan, Colorado, California, Iceland, Oregon and Eastern Washington, including stays in Ephrata, Grant Orchard, Moses Lake, Clarkston and finally, Whidbey Island in 1966. After retirement from NAS Whidbey, Bill operated Bill’s Machine Shop in Oak Harbor. Their only son Scot died in 1967 and in 1975, they moved to Clarkston, where Bill passed away. In 1997, Vira returned to Oak Harbor. With failing health Harbor Towers became home.
Vira joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1951 and was active in their work. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, bridge, decorating, flowers, creating jewelry, going to garage sales and traveling the country.
Vira is survived by her daughter Jean Stone and husband Bill of Coupeville and grandchildren, David Lee Martin Campbell and Wayne Clifford Martin and great grandchildren, David Ray and Jennifer Rose. Her husband Bill preceded her in death in 1989.
Private family graveside services were held at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery, Seattle on Sept. 10. Memorial services will be held Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall, 301 NE Ronhaar. A time of fellowship will follow at Chelsea Apartments Community center, 180 NE Izette Street.
