Thomas Orrin Simmonds

Thomas Orrin Simmonds, age 86, of Sacramento, Calif., passed away on June 22, 2011, in Coupeville after an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 29, 1924 ,to Clyde chapel and Doris Irene (Pugh) Simmonds in Sacramento, Calif. Upon his graduation from high school, Thomas joined the U.S. Navy and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. After his discharge, he married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara L. Wurts on Aug. 29, 1947. Together they had two children and fostered Kevin, Steven and Lonnie Bourland. Thomas built three family homes in the Sacramento area. He worked as a professional painter and paper hanger. In 1995, he and Barbara moved to Whidbey Island where he was a woodcarver extraordinaire. He especially enjoyed creating Native American and nature carvings. Thomas also loved sitting in his sunroom watching the boats on the harbor and the eagles overhead.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Jerry Lee. He is survived by his wife of 64 years and his daughter, Linda, four grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Burial will take place at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Oak Harbor. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or another charity of choice.
