Sandra Kay Burns-DeHart: Jan. 22, 1954 – March 10, 2019

On Sunday, March 10, 2019, Sandra Kay Burns-DeHart, loving wife, sister, aunt and friend to many, passed away at the age of 65, after a long brave battle with cancer.

Kay was born on January 22, 1954 in Everett, WA to Robert (Bob) and Myrtle (Stewart) Burns. She was an honor roll student at Mariner High School, graduating class of 1972. While working for the Washington State Ferries she made many lifelong friendships. On April 20, 2009, she married Mel DeHart. They raised two fur babies, Snickers and Minnie Mocha.

Kay was an artist at heart. With a passion for painting rocks and doodling. She also loved to take her dogs on long walks on the beach and look for the perfect painting rocks. Her rocks were much admired by friends and family. Sometimes she left some on the beach to bring joy to those that found them. She also loved her time on the water, boating, crabbing and fishing. She was known for her quick wit, her infectious laugh, and her kind and compassionate spirit. She enjoyed living in the peaceful community of Freeland on Whidbey Island.

Kay was preceded in death by her father, Bob, her mother, Myrtle and her brother Don. She is survived by her husband Mel, her brothers Steve, Dennis and Ken, her sisters Betty, Judy, and Elaine, several cousins, nieces, and nephews. As well as great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the American Legion Hall on 14096 WA-525, Langley, WA 98260 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Donations may be sent to WAIF Animal Shelter, Coupeville.
