A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec.11 for Robert Newberry Power of Springfield, Ore., who died Nov.28, 2004, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 79.
Robert Power was born May 25, 1925, in Bellingham to Marion N. Power and Frances O. Power. He married Barbara Bennett Sept. 18, 1946. She died in 1996.
He grew up on Whidbey Island, where he graduated from Coupeville High School.
After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, he attended the University of Washington.
After a brief photography career, he took a sales job with Formica Corp., and lived in Portland, Ore., Denver, Colo., San Rafael, Calif., and Huntington Beach, Calif. He worked for the company for 25 years, retiring in 1983. In his retirement, he spent much time with his family and friends; he was an active golfer and bridge player. He enjoyed daily walks and traveling with his wife, Barbara, to Hawaii and Alaska, as well as the Carribean, Mexico, and New Zealand.
He loved his hometown of Coupeville, and enjoyed visiting the places of his youth on the island in 2003.
He was a beloved father and friend. He leaves behind a son, Steve Power of Tigard, Ore.; two daughters, Terri Thiele of Springfield, Ore. and Sebastiane Power of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, Barry Power of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Pat Fox of Newport, Ore.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Saturday’s service will be at 2 p.m. at Tigard Church of God, 15670 98th Street in Tigard, Ore. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
