Robert L. Glasscock died May 9, 2007, in his home in Oak Harbor after a brief bout with pancreatitis. He was 90 years old.
He grew up the youngest of seven children on a farm near Bowling Green, Ken. He attended Western Kentucky College before enlisting in the Navy.
He served aboard several ships on the East Coast. He was commissioned during WWII and served as a ship’s engineering officer in the Western Pacific and Europe.
He married Dorothy after the war. They were married for 58 years and had one child.
Robert continued to serve the USA in various intelligence billets including a tour on Admiral’s staff in the Middle East. He retired in 1957.
He completed his B.A. at San Jose State and moved to Oregon in 1959 where he attended Willamette University to become certified to teach high school Spanish and history. He was the mayor of Scotts Mills, Ore., and worked as a volunteer fireman while finishing his certification.
He taught at Gervais High School before being asked to take the position of principal/superintendent of schools in the Gervais area. In 1970 he retired from his career in Oregon.
Retirement activities included working with Dorothy to remodel the family home and enjoying many visits from his daughter, son-in-law and the grandchildren. He and Dorothy also traveled around the country and made a few trips out of the country.
Robert and Dorothy moved to Oak Harbor in 1997 to be nearer to daughter Gaylene Reiten, son-in-law Bob Reiten and grandchildren Kari and Andrew.
Dorothy died in 2004. Robert continued to live in his own home with the support of caregivers. The day he died, those who cared for him were gathered at his bedside to share special songs, poems, anointing and tender nurture. A special thanks for that time to Michael and Netsah Zylinsky, Lana Burton, Linda Edling, Jon and Lori Rubin, Holly Chadwick, Rob and Muriel Rydell, Kathleen and Gerry Hammond, Jerry Buss, and Robert’s grandchildren Kari and Andrew who made a special effort to come be with their grandfather during this special time of closure.
Graveside service and burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the cemetery in Scotts Mills, Ore.
