Robert James Watkins

Robert James Watkins, 45, died at his home in Oak Harbor on July 1, 2003. He was born Sept. 3, 1957, in North Hollywood, Calif., to Lawson Lavaun and Mary Katherine (Burkepile) Watkins.

Mr. Watkins was raised in Southern California. He moved with his family to Northern California, where he graduated from Geyserville High School. Shortly after graduation he began traveling the country. In 1979 he moved to Jackson, Miss.

Mr. Watkins worked as a hydraulics engineer for most of his life. He was married to Kathleen A. Graham in Jackson, Miss., May 29, 1981. Two years ago they moved to Oak Harbor.

Mr. Watkins loved to travel. He was an avid reader, especially of history. He was a patriot, poet and singer. He especially enjoyed ballads and country music. He was very intelligent.

Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife Kathleen “Kathy” Watkins of Oak Harbor; by two children, Michael Watkins and Tracy Watkins, both of Oak Harbor, and his mother, Mary K. Watkins of Simi Valley, Calif. Five sisters and one brother, David Watkins of Glendive, Mont.; Katherine Jones of Devore, Calif.; Dolly Richards of Mount Shasta City, Calif.,; Mary Hamlet of Fresno, Calif.; Christine Anderson of Sacramento, Calif., and Susan Mako of Simi Valley, Calif. also survive.

Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 5, at 3 p.m., at Whidbey Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dave Templin officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
