Robert J. Brunskill

Robert J. ‘Bob’ Brunskill died at his home in Lander, Wyo., on Jan. 18, 2006, of lung cancer. He was 81 years old.

Cremation has taken place and burial at sea will take place at a later time.

Robert John Brunskill was born near Kinnear, Wyo., on Feb. 15, 1924, the youngest son of William George and Gladys (Schenck) Brunskill. The family lived in Morton, Dubois, Lander, and Fort Washakie. He started school in Lander in 1930 and attended school at Fort Washakie. The family moved to Yakima in 1936 and he was graduated from high school in June of 1941.

He joined the U.S. Navy following graduation and served in the Navy for 28 years.

In World War II, he was in PBY Seaplanes in the North Pacific. In the Korean War, he served on the aircraft carriers Boxer and Kearsarge. Between wars, he served on the carrier Wasp. In the Vietnam War, he served on the aircraft carriers Ticonderoga and Ranger. He was also on exchange duty with the U.S. Air Force.

He married Mary Pasachnik at Naval Air Station Agana, Guam in 1961.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Cmdr. Brunskill lived in Lander for about 10 years. He moved to the Pacific Northwest where he pursued a career in forestry. He returned to Lander in 1993 and was active in the Fremont County Master Gardeners program and the Lander Urban Forest Council. His family said Cmdr. Brunskill loved the state of Wyoming and its people.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters.
