The Army Air Corps became the U.S. Air Force. He was transferred to the DEW-Line station at Yaak, Montana, serving as a radio operator. He was married to Donna Whiteside in Tacoma on Feb. 5, 1951.

They purchased a 32-foot Chris Craft powerboat and began traveling the waterways of Puget Sound. Seven years later, they moved into Oak Harbor and became residents of Western Village.

Bob was an avid writer of short stories, humor and fiction. He published a story of one of his boating trips, where he crossed into the closed waters of Bangor Submarine Base. Failing to clear the area quickly enough, the Navy took the liberty of firing a practice torpedo at Bob and Donna, narrowly missing their boat. Bob wrote of the adventure to share with others.
