Richard Cavanaugh

Richard (Dick) J. Cavanaugh, Sr. died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Spokane. Dick was born on May 4, 1932 in Boston. He graduated from Gate of Heaven High School in 1949. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and in 1953 married the former Lorraine Melia. Dick served in the U. S. Navy for 24 Years retiring as a senior chief petty officer from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. He then worked for Oak Harbor School District until retiring in 1993. In 1994 Dick and his wife Lorraine moved to Moses Lake where he was very active at the VFW. They moved to Spokane in 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Lorraine (Melia) Cavanaugh; Daughters and sons-in-law, Marianne and Bill Flowers of Moses Lake, Paula and Bob Maholchic of Kennesaw, Ga., Linda and Pat Walsh of Oak Harbor and Erin and Michael Stamerra of Silverdale: Sons and daughter-in-law, Richard (Skip) J. Cavanaugh, Jr. of Spokane, and John and Robin Cavanaugh of Selah. His son Mark T. Cavanaugh preceded him in death in 1983. Dick was the proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by Sister Nancy Cavanaugh (SSJ), and brothers Lawrence, John and Stephen Cavanaugh all of Boston.

The family will hold a memorial service on Monday, Dec. 30, from 1-4 p.m. at Cascade Community Clubhouse in Spokane.

A memorial fund to honor him is set up at the Bank Of America c/o James Thrawley at PO Box 952 Otis Orchards, WA 99027. Benefit funds will assist Southside Senior Center of Spokane, Food Bank of Spokane and VFW of Moses Lake.
