Phyllis I. Wright

Phyllis I. Wright, 90, passed away May 10, 2008.

Phyllis along with her identical twin, Elaine, was born in Newaygo County, Mich., on March 18, 1918, to John and Magdalean Baggott. She grew up in Ludington with her mom and dad and siblings: Elaine, Betty and John. It was here that she met her husband, John E.C. Wright.

After graduating from Ludington High School in 1936, Phyllis attended and graduated from Ferris Institute business school after which she worked for the city of Ludington until her marriage to John on Aug. 16, 1941. After their marriage, Phyllis and John moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where they both worked while John earned an MBA from the University of Michigan. After graduation John entered the Navy.

Married to a Navy officer, Phyllis traveled and entertained from Guam to Virginia to California to Pennsylvania to Hawaii back to Virginia and back to California over 28 years. She was active in the Navy Wives Club. Phyllis and John retired to San Diego in 1971.

Loving mother to three, Phyllis was an excellent seamstress, great cook, scout leader, confidante, incredible gardener and peacemaker.

Phyllis was always active! She loved fishing, hiking, camping and travel. Phyllis continued trout fishing in the high Sierra well into her 80s!

Phyllis is survived by her children, Elaine McDowell, Mary Jones and John Wright; her grandchildren, Kimberly Wolter, Misty McDowell, Josh Wright and Zachary Jones; and her great granddaughter, Alyssa Mattler. Also surviving Phyllis are her nieces and nephews, Phyllis Johnson, Dan Barber, Ann Barone, Earl Sauers, Carl Sauers, John Baggott and Marianne Studebaker.
