Capt. Philip Warren Ozab, USN (Ret.), 79, of Oak Harbor, longtime former resident of Thousand Oaks, Calif., died at his home Jan. 8, 2005.
Capt. Ozab was born in San Fernando, Calif., May 24, 1925, to Edward Ozab and Dorothy (Potter) Ozab. He was raised in Havana, Cuba, where his father was a representative for U.S. Steel. Philip graduated from a boarding school in Mount Hermon, Vt., after which he entered the US Navy, and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During the Korean Conflict, he was the captain of the USS Polk County (LST 1084). He served in the Navy Reserve and retired in 1984. He received a bachelor of arts degree in languages from UCLA, and spoke four languages fluently (with no accent), including French, Spanish and Japanese.
Oct. 1, 1949, Philip married Marcella Haymond in St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church in San Fernando, Calif. The couple lived in Thousand Oaks, Calif., for 30 years. Philip was employed by the Southern California Edison Company for 30 years, retiring in 1982 as an area manager. Philip and Marcella moved to Oak Harbor in January 2001.
Philip was a charter member and past-president of the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club, in which he was a Paul Harris Fellow; was past-president of the Thousand Oaks Chamber of Commerce; was on the Board of Trustees of Los Robles Regional Hospital; was the Man of the Year for Thousand Oaks; was a volunteer for the Southern California Edison Company Senior Program; he was a member of the Reserve Officer Association and attended the Undersea Naval Warfare School at Port Hueneme, Calif. Philip was also a member of Church in Thousand Oaks and St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Oak Harbor.
Philip is survived by his wife, Marcella, at home; daughter Michele Miller of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Miller, Rachel Lynn Miller and Jonathan Philip Miller, all of Oak Harbor; brother Donald Ozab and wife Norma of Cambria, Calif.; also, seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Ozab, in 1989 and by his son-in-law Richard Miller in 1992.
A Vigil Service will be Friday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine’s, Rev. Ronald Belisle Celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
