He discovered the beauty of Whidbey Island while serving as a fireman in the United States Navy. Shortly thereafter, he made Oak Harbor his home and lived as a local resident for 60 years.

Oscar’s final years were shared with his special companion, Loretta Zehner, with whom he enjoyed traveling, an occasional cruise and good food.

Together, they shared a passion for square dancing and enjoyed many club events with their dancing friends.

Oscar loved working on old used cars to a fault and never strayed from his mechanical tinkering.

Oscar was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurie Jayne Bakke-Palmer.

He is survived by his three children, John D. Bakke, Janice E. Smith and Cathy L. Wagoner; 10 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jun. 8, 2019, at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MS Society, as this cause was near and dear to his heart.
