Michael Young, formerly of Coupeville, died Jan. 10, 2009, in Las Vegas, following a brief illness. He is survived by his son, Sean Young, and former wife, Mary Ann Young, of Las Vegas (Henderson); his parents, Harold Young of Coupeville and Carroll Young of Oak Harbor; his sister, Wendy Young-Guffey of Missouri, and Wendy’s daughters Sarah, Emma and Quinn.
Mike was born Nov. 11, 1961, in Bethesda, Md. During his father’s military career he lived in Virginia, Florida, San Diego and the Philippines before moving to Whidbey Island in 1975.
Mike’s love of music was an important part of his whole life. While in junior high school in New Orleans he studied trumpet under a well-known musician, and played in a marching jazz band for many Mardi Gras parades.
Mike graduated from Coupeville High School in 1979. He worked in the building industry locally until 1986, when he moved to Las Vegas. He helped build many of the major hotels and casinos on the strip over a 20-year career. In 2005 he became a building inspector for Clark County, Nev., a position he held at his death.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held in Coupeville in late summer, when he will be returned to his beloved Ebey’s Prairie. His friends and classmates are encouraged to share thoughts, memories and stories of Mike via email at cyoung@windermere.com. They will be shared at his memorial service.
