Michael Clark

Michael F. “Mickey” Clark, 93, a lifelong resident of Coupeville, passed away Sept. 10, 2003, at Careage of Whidbey Wednesday.

Mr. Clark was born May 11, 1910, at Fort Casey, to Thomas C. Clark and Anna (Scharlock) Clark. Baseball was Mickey’s passion, and he enjoyed many days playing ball on the post team with his father, Thomas C. Clark and his brother, Thomas W. Clark. A graduate of Coupeville High School, he attended St. Martin’s College and Western Washington University.

Mickey was married June 10, 1937, to Margaret Petersen, who taught school at Coupeville Elementary School for many years. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for 34 years. Mickey was a charter member and past-president of Coupeville Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award from Lions International. He was a charter member of Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Club. Mickey served on Coupeville Town Council for several years. He spent many years organizing and supervising youth programs in basketball, softball, baseball and swimming. In 1975, Coupeville School District honored him by dedicating the new athletic field as “Mickey Clark Field.” Mickey spent his later years reviewing Coupeville and Fort Casey history.

Mickey is survived by his one daughter, Patricia Thoraldson and husband Ted of Coupeville; one son, Dennis Clark and wife Bonnie of Toledo; eight grandchildren, Kara Fery, Courtney Clark, Kael Clark, Kyle Buckner, Troy Buckner, Jill Geringer, Julie Wiles and Jennifer Thoraldson; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine DeVries of Oak Harbor and Katherine Arnswaldt of Coupeville; also, numerous nieces and nephews. Mickey received special care for many years from his niece Dorothy Keefe. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and brothers Thomas and Scharlock.

In keeping with his wishes, a private inurnment and family celebration of Mr. Clark’s life will be held in lieu of a formal funeral service. Memorials may be made to the Coupeville Lions Club or to Whidbey General Hospital. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
