Matilda Elizabeth (Betty) Wright

Betty Wright, 82, an 18-year resident of Coupeville, died at home in the arms of her family on March 23, 2009.

Betty was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio, on Oct. 18, 1926, to Fred and Matilda Hormell. She moved with her family to Bremerton, where she graduated from Bremerton High School. She went on to attend St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, Yakima. While in school, she met her future husband, Kermit Wright, whom she married shortly after her graduation in September 1949.

They made homes in Toppenish, and Kennewick, where they started their family. In 1962, the family moved to Sacramento, Calif., where they lived until retirement in 1992.

Betty is survived by one brother, George and wife Kathy Hormell of Sacramento; her five children, Mary Jo Boylon and husband Bill of Coupeville, Pam Enos and husband Larry of Elk Grove, Calif., Thomas Wright of Sacramento, Kathleen Wright and husband Larry Wagner of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Susan Elias and husband David of Benicia, Calif.; four grandchildren, Brandee Jo Enos and Cory Enos of Sacramento, Pam Zientek of Federal Way and Matthew Elias of Benicia; three great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Cody and Logan; also several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Kermit.

“Grama,” as Betty was called, was well known on North Whidbey. Many of the family’s friends and business acquaintances would stop by to visit and have lunch with Grama. She loved to ride the Island bus system and knew all the local drivers.

In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held. Celebration Of Life will be private. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or charity of choice.
