Maryon passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her loving family Wednesday, July 28 at WhidbeyHealth in Coupeville, Wash.

She was born at West Seattle Hospital and grew up and attended Seattle schools. She enjoyed spending every vacation and holiday at her aunt and uncles on Madrona Way in Coupeville, with her cousins. Their playground was Goodbeach on Penn Cove, where they watched the Smith brothers fish for smelt. These were some of her most cherished memories.

Maryon married Harold Smith in 1948 and they were stationed at Camp Cook, Lompoc, Calif. A few years later the Army sent him to Korea. While he was away in Korea, Maryon moved in with her cousin Verna and Max Sibon and their five children in California. During that time she became like a second mother to all the Sibon children.

After Harold came home, the Army sent them back to Lompoc, then Vandenberg Air Force Base. Maryon worked Civil Service in communications there and was able to see some of the first unmanned and then manned ships go into space.

When Harold retired from the Army at Vandenberg AFB and Civil Service, Maryon left her Civil Service job too, and then was hired in supply at NAS Whidbey and worked there until her retirement.

She enjoyed sitting on their front porch watching Harold fish for smelt as his father did before him. She also helped him pack up the slippery smelt to sell at their “smelt shack” next to their home and into boxes to take to Pike Place Market in Seattle and to Bellingham.

They enjoyed their lives there for 50-plus years and their nieces and nephews moved up to be near them, as well as their mother Verna.

Maryon and Harold hosted holiday and family dinners at their home for many years. She was always able to help each niece and nephew in different ways as though they were her own. While her nieces and nephews were young, Maryon and Harold would take a couple of them on vacations from California to Washington state to visit their family. She gifted the Sibon nieces and nephews with their favorite Dachshund “Duke,” and even had a hand with raising the Sibon children in their home in Lompoc for a couple of vacation weeks or even a year or more.

In her later years, when she could no longer drive. She loved to just take rides in the car, enjoying the beauty of the trees and waters of Whidbey.

Maryon loved volunteering after retirement and was a 35-year member of the Coupeville Lions Club and, before that, a charter member of the Coupeville Lady Lions. She volunteered at the Coupeville food bank, Whidbey General Hospital Auxiliary, and Coupeville United Methodist Church, where she attended as a child and for 50 years since returning to Washington state.

Preceding her in death were her parents sea Capt. Sylvester and Kate Singer Glass; husband Harold Smith; cousins Verna Coates Sibon and Arthuretta Tolliver Atkins Tryon; nephew Mark L Sibon (Anna-Marie); and niece Annabelle Atkins Loquillano.

Maryon is survived by her nieces, Elizabeth Sibon Wilson, Maxene Sibon Varga (John) and Julie Sibon Lamoureux, all of Coupeville, and Anna Smith Fry (Lloyd), of Washougal, Wash.; nephews Gregory N Sibon (Danne), of Coupeville, and LeRoy Atkins, of Mesa, Ariz.; and many grand-nephews and nieces of Washington, Arizona and Ohio and all of their children. She was much loved and will be missed by all of us..

A family graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, Wash. Memorials can be made to the Coupeville United Methodist Church.
