Mary Eileen Martin

Mary Eileen Martin, 58, died peacefully at home June 22, 2011, after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Wilmington, Del., to William P. and Eileen Quinlan-Martin. She attended schools in Delaware and Florida.

After school, Mary traveled Europe and worked in several fields. She met her husband, Allan, and had two beautiful children, Jessica and Robbie. She lived in Georgia until the family moved to Portland, Ore. In order to help support the family she opened a children’s center in her home. Her love and commitment to her children and those in her care enabled them to enjoy the arts and music and theater. Mary taught self esteem, self confidence and self worth to all in her care, plus she taught them to just have fun.

Mary then moved into hospitality. She worked in sales at several hotels. She worked on several charities, including O’ Christmas trees at Providence, and she volunteered at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in the Neonatal Department in Portland.

Mary enjoyed life to the fullest: life at the beach with warm sand and colorful sunsets, kayaking with brother Joe, paddling and racing with The Dragon Boat Club, a great concert or a walk in the park. Mary enjoyed her family around her, especially her children, siblings and nieces and nephews, cousins and her Mamacita.

Mary is survived by her children Jessica Middendorf of New York City and Robbie Middendorf of Portland, Ore., her mother Eileen Martin of Oak Harbor and eight siblings.

A memorial service for Mary was held Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Burley Funeral Chapel. Friends may go online at www.burleyfuneralchapel.com to sign a guest register and leave memories for the family.
