Marvyn LeRoy Berkeland

Marvyn LeRoy Berkeland passed away at Mount Vernon, Washington on Aug. 14 from complications due to diabetes, kidney, and heart disease.

Marvyn was born on April 3, 1930 in Palo Alto County Iowa, to Bertel and Blanche (Olson) Berkeland. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew Iowa. He was a 1948 graduate of Fenton High school in Fenton, Iowa. Following graduation, Marv enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country for several years during the Korean War. He moved to Southern California in 1954, where he lived and worked in the Whittier area.

Marv later moved to Whidbey Island where he was a volunteer fireman and the Superintendent of the Clinton Water District for 25 years. Marv entered into marriage with Eileen Zwingenberg on June 1979. They worked together in their own business after Marvyn retired and lived in Burlington. The two were very active in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and enjoyed camping and traveling in their fifth wheel. Marv was also very active in the American Legion in both Whidbey Island and California.

Marvyn leaves to mourn his wife of 27 years Eileen Berkeland at the family home; step-daughter Joanne Zwingenberg of Sun Valley Idaho; brothers Robert Berkeland and his wife Jeanne of St. Paul Minnesota, Harold Berkeland and his wife Marian of Fairmont Minn.; sisters Virginia of Urbandale Iowa, Doris Keinholz and her husband Oliver of Mount Vernon, Iola Kalvig and her husband Elmer of east Des Moines, Iowa. His parents and a sister Irene Franson predeceased Marv.

A Memorial Celebration of Marv’s life will be held Sunday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. at the Skagit Valley Eagles located at 119 N. Cherry St. Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Skagit Valley Eagles Auxiliary in Burlington, Washington. A special thanks to the Skagit Valley Eagles Auxiliary.
