Marie Carrie Smith

Marie Carrie Smith died peacefully in her home on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006. She was born to Minnie and Waldie Beck in Cross Timbers, Missouri, on May 7, 1938.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl Smith, Jerry Smith and wife Janice, Teresa Araucto and husband Joseph, and Jeff Smith and wife Tamara Thompson; granddaughters Sarah, Amanda, and Amy Smith, Stephanie Merritt, Soria, Shainna, and Samantha Jo Araucto, and Hannah Smith; sister Luella Nease, brother Loren Beck and wife Pearl, and sister Wilma Brown and husband Jack.

Early in life Marie’s family moved to Oregon where she grew up in the Eugene area and worked until her marriage to Buddy E. Smith on March 31, 1956. They were married for 32 years then divorced in 1988. She lived most of her life in Oregon and Washington, but also lived in California and Maine. She enjoyed traveling to Russia, England, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. She collected rocks from around the world.

Marie received her high school GED when she was 40 years old, attended Beauty School in Portland, Ore., and received her cosmetology license. She loved being a mother and grandmother and general purveyor of wisdom to those she loved. She took her health seriously and fought an autoimmune disease for over 10 years with natural remedies.

She was a devoted Christian and attended numerous churches throughout her life. She attended Pheobe Women’s Bible study at Oak Harbor Southern Baptist Church and Praise and Worship at Living Word.

During her last month of life Marie was cared for by her children, Skagit Hospice and Visiting Angels. Memorials may be made to Skagit Hospice, 2031A Hospital Drive, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at Living Word, 490 NW Crosby Ave. in Oak Harbor.
