Marceau Schartman

Marceau G. “Marty” Schartman, 88, of Oak Harbor, died Nov. 7, 2002, at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

Mr. Schartman was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Red Lodge, Montana, to Joseph Schartman and Celina (Lignoule) Schartman. He was raised in the Great Falls area, and worked on various construction jobs, specializing in cement work. In September 1950 he entered the Navy, serving until Aug. 1970, when he retired as a builder chief (E-7.)

During his career in the military, he served as a Sea-Bee at many far-flung duty stations, including Bermuda, Cuba, Newfoundland, Morocco, Antigua, Japan and Vietnam, as well as several stateside locations.

Marty married Frances Sinkey on Aug. 24, 1960, in Oxnard, Calif. They moved to Oak Harbor in 1978. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 7392, Elks Lodge No. 2362, the CPO Club and the Senior Center of Oak Harbor. He enjoyed golfing, traveling and camping.

Marty is survived by his wife Frances at home; one step-daughter, Barbara Cruickshank of Long Beach, Calif.; two step-sons, Brion Sinkey of Packwood and Stephen Sinkey of Ventura, Calif.; several step-grandchildren; one niece, Denise Bauer and husband Ray of Great Falls, Mont.; also several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Karaffa and Guillaume Zunchich.
