Graveside funeral services for Mae M. Blevins will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m., at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Wayne Goodman will officiate.
Mae Munro Blevins died at Whidbey Island Manor, Oak Harbor, Sept. 5, 2004, at the age of 95. She was born May 29, 1909, in Roslyn. She was raised in Tacoma by her mother and step-father, Florence (Craig) and Alexander Munro.
Mae graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma. She worked for a time at the Panitorium Cleaning Company and also at Woolworth’s in Tacoma.
She was married to Earl B. Blevins in Tacoma July 18, 1937. Earl was in the U.S. Navy and she traveled with him to duty stations in California, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., through various tours at sea and finally to Whidbey Island. Oak Harbor became home for the Blevins family in 1953.
Mae and Earl lived in a Navy Quonset hut, which later became the first Olympic View Elementary School. They then moved to Title Eight Housing at Clover Valley, and finally to their 40-acre farm on Monkey Hill.
Mae put a tremendous value on education; two of her three children and one grandchild became teachers. She was a constant volunteer in school classrooms and projects. She was an active member of Oak Harbor Band Boosters Club. She worked with scouting, was an avid reader, enjoyed crafts, painting, gardening, sewing and canning.
Mae was a former member of First Baptist Church of Oak Harbor. She was a 72-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. She was a long time member of the Oak Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 254 of Oak Harbor. She served as Noble Grand in Unified Encampment No. 61 of Camano Island and was one of the original advisory officers of Acorn Theta Rho No. 79 of Oak Harbor. She also served several terms on the Jurisdictional Youth Committee.
Mae is survived by two children, Judy L. Diekman and husband Bill and Earl Blevins, Jr., all of Oak Harbor and one sister, Elva Combs of Tacoma. Ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Blevins, Sr., one daughter Diane Blevins Schmidt and four brothers, Marvin Munro, Bill Munro, Jack Munro and William Craig.
