Lyle Wallace Galivan

Lyle Wallace Galivan, 85, 49-year resident of Oak Harbor, died July 28, 2003 at Home Place Special Care Facility.

Mr. Galivan was born Oct. 2, 1917 in Port Angeles to Floyd Spaid and Alta (Cooley) Spaid. He was raised in Port Angeles. In 1941, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. On July 2, 1944, he married Dorothy Georgalis in Modesto, Calif. He retired from the Navy in 1960 with the rank of petty officer first class as a hospital corpsman. Following this, he was employed by Oak Harbor Police Department as a dispatcher and jailer, a position from which he retired in 1977. He was actively involved at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Base Chapel from 1954 until 1970. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2362 for a short time. He enjoyed photography as a hobby.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Dorothy, at home; his two daughters, Erifilie “Lee” A. Kolden and husband Roger and Irene P. Shima and husband Noel, all of Juneau, Alaska; five grandchildren, Erin Carlburg and husband Chris of Minneapolis, Sarah Kolden of Juneau, Alaska; Christian Kolden of Corvallis, Ore.; Annie Shima of Honolulu, and Jason Shima of Juneau, Alaska; four great-grandchildren, Bailey J., Megan and Emma (twins) and Parker Carlburg, all of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by one son, Terry, in February 1993.

A memorial service will be Thursday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. in Burley Funeral Chapel, Cmdr. Fred Renfroe, CHC, USN (Ret.) officiating. Full military honors will be under the auspices of the NAS Whidbey Honor Guard. Private inurnment will take place later at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
