Lyle John Elm, 75, died Dec. 22, 2006 in Oak Harbor surrounded by close family. He was born July 13, 1931 to Ora and Zella Elm in Genoa, Neb.
When John was six, the family moved to Portland, Ore., where he graduated from Parkrose High School and Lewis and Clark College.
In 1952, John entered the Naval Cadet Program, receiving his wings in 1954. While in Pensacola, Fla., he sang in the cadet choir. He met his wife Geraldine, a Navy nurse, at Oak Knoll Hospital. They were married in August of 1955. John’s duty stations took him to Japan, the Philippines, New York, Dallas and Oak Harbor.
After retiring in 1974, he returned to Oak Harbor and attended Western Washington University for an accounting degree. John was also a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge. He also drove school buses for several years. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting for elk and deer with friends.
John is survived by his son David; his two special princesses and granddaughters, Ashley and Emma; two grandsons, Cody and Brandon; daughter-in-law Charlotte; sister Patricia (Gene) Anderson; brother Joe (Willida) Elm; and many great nieces, nephews, cousins, countless dear friends and wonderful neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine, his parents and a niece, Cynthia.
At John’s request there will be no funeral. A memorial service is to be held in early February. John had requested that all remembrances be made to the Amyloidosis Research Foundation, 4174 Meyers Ave., Waterford MI 48239.
