Kenneth R. (Kenny) Merrell, born Oct. 14, 1939 in San Antonio, Texas, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in his sleep Aug. 13, 2008 at 8:15 p.m. in Oak Harbor. Kenny is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Ken and Rod; daughter, Shannon; six grandchildren, Justin, Kristyn, Hannah, Eli, Sophia, and Evan; and two brothers, Paul and David Merrell of San Antonio.
Kenny retired from a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy in 1986 following 28 years of service with the rank of master chief. He settled in Oak Harbor, his home and “little slice of paradise,” where he loved Carol, reconnected with his children, nurtured his grandchildren, read a lot of books, and wrote poetry.
In early March of this year, Kenny was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer. The disease progressed quickly and Kenny entered the Home Health Hospice Program in late July. He died as he lived, peacefully, without complaint, in the loving circle of family and friends.
According to his wishes, a small private ceremony for loved ones, friends, and family was held at his residence on Sunday, Aug. 17. Kenny’s ashes will be held in state until such time that they are joined with those of his wife Carol to be interred together at sea.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
